Do as I say...

Saturday's Star-Tribune features a bootlicking article on Mike Erlandson, former Minnesota state Democratic party chairman who has thrown his hat in the ring to replace retiring 48-term congressman Martin Sabo.

The write-up is headlined "Environment tops Erlandson Campaign". In it, Erlandson claims that he had "an environmental epiphany" early in his political career that motivated him to establish a "bicycle division" within Minnesota's Department of Transportation. (???)

"If we don't address global warming and climate change, all the other issues aren't going to mean a lot 10 years from now," Erlandson said at a Minneapolis news conference.

The article then lists the other contenders in the race just before this too-good-for-commentary tidbit:

"Erlandson said he intends to get rid of his Cadillac Escalade because of environmental concerns and the cost of filling the tank."

Heh.

You gotta love the hypocrites---so unaware of all the fodder they are providing for good bloggers everywhere!

Maybe he should slap some Nation of Islam stickers all over his SUV. Everything would be okay then.

I saw this, too, and it made me laugh out loud. This guy is a joke. Not to mention a whiner (witness his performance at the DFL convention). Besides, I am an Ellison guy, so I am happy to see another candidate look like an idiot. And Republicans thought Ellison was taking care of the whole "looking like a fool" thing all by himself . . .

Wait, your trying to say that Ellison is somehow better than this other guy?

Ellison will be a complete embarrassment to this state. It will be our Cynthia McKinny.

Ellison has a nice resume of supporting hate groups and convicted murderers. He is also a big hater himself - calling Jews the most racist white people (implying that all whites are racist).

Why do people vote for candidates like this. I mean there are so many other good candidates. Is it some sort of stockholm syndrom?

I'm sorry to disappoint you, Sloan, but I am a big Ellison guy. Maybe that's why I hate Erlandson so much? In fact, I went to Ellison's campaign kick-off party and was an early contributor to his campaign. Which is why I'm not too happy about these, ahem, misteps in his campaign. I've known Ellison since I was in law school and have always been a fan of his (I know it's cliched, but I'll say it anyways) "Wellstonian" passion. I'm sort of hoping he'll revive that legacy.

I wonder what's "Wellstonian" about being of disciple of a man who called Jews bloodsuckers. Then there's that little soap comment...

Ellison is just not a liberal American. He is not part of the discussion, as JFK put it, where we all want the same thing, we just have different ideas about getting there.

No. Ellison has different goals altogether, which is why he is out of the mainstream.

I see Ellison as someone who wants people like me and my family to have less freedom and to have a lower standard of living in the future. He hates people like me and my family. No...he doesn't want to advocate policies which give more freedom and a higher standard of living for everyone, he want's to create equilty by tearing down those he hates. It is from this ideology that you get comments like Jews are bloodsuckers.

I deleted a couple of comments this afternoon immediately after I learned that a vile anonymous post was not submitted as a joke by my friend.

I do not personally have a horse in this congressional race - each candidate's agenda is antithetical to my political philosophy as it currently stands. That's just the state of the 5th district...

However, I do believe there is an enormous difference between a candidate who's goofy (like Mike Erlandson) vs. one who cut his political teeth with a group like the Nation of Islam.

Youthful indescretion? Maybe. I personally haven't read enough about Ellison's past to know. However, I do doubt that a Republican prospect would be afforded any media leniency if he aligned himself with such an organization in the past.

What if it was Ahmad Rashad running for this seat? After catching the Hail Mary from Tommy Kramer against Cleveland, you'd cut him some slack, right? My point is, all Black Muslims are not racists by definition, so I think it's dangerous to condemn people by association. Not to mention that you wouldn't want to be judged, today, by your associations in the period from, oh, I don't know, 1990 to 1992, say.

Converting to a religion is different from high-profile devotion to a political organization whose leaders spout appalling bile. Wouldn't you think?

Maybe Koz is right that Ellison will make no difference. Further, if you think politically about Ellison, he could be a good thing for conservatives. Ellison's votes would be no different than any other democrat from the 5th. However, we may get the added bonus of Ellison constantly embarrassing the democratic party with his hate speech and radical politics. This could transfer in to more republican votes statewide. Ellison = more votes for Kennedy.

I can see it now... Ellison constantly standing behind his future mentor in Congress Cynthia Mckinny.

Further, Ellisons disregard for minor laws, such as his parking tickets etc... is just a predictor of things to come. People who tend to ignore small laws eventually ignore the bigger ones too.

Ellison will offer rich territory for investigative journalists in the future (at least the ones who aren't being paid by the DNC).
