The Urban Sprawl Fen-tasy

Back from vacation.

Every year, Pretty, BENRY & I load up the Family Truckster & head somewhere on a summer road trip. I'm always amazed at just how much land this country is blessed with. Manifest Destiny, indeed.

Within 30 minutes of leaving suburban Minneapolis, you find yourself in what feels like the middle of nowhere, regardless the direction you venture. It makes you realize that the enlightened "Smart Growth" crowd is, ahem, misguided.

My in-laws, whom we see regularly, are Social Justice types who subscribe to this "Don't believe your eyes, believe us" worldview. At a dinner earlier this year, my sister in-law proclaimed while lamenting Urban Sprawl, "I think it should be illegal to cut down trees".

After noting their sprawling (ha ha) wood house carved out of an acre of woods in a prestigious wooded lakeside suburb, I quietly excused myself from the wooden table, grabbed a cold beer and went outside to play with the kids on the playset. Made of wood, of course. (Hiding behind children during war isn't always reprehensible...)

Here's a map and some statistics from the State of Minnesota that may help if you truly believe we're being overrun by strip malls and McMansions. Only 2.7% of Minnesota is developed. By comparison, 10.6% is home to "bog/marsh/fen".

"Fen"?

I always liked your sister-in-law but I could never put my finger on just why. And I don't know about you, but when I'm 30 minutes from my house I usually find myself in a traffic jam on Highway 5 heading to Chanhassen. Lastly, I agree that we need to stop the spread of fen. That shit is taking over our state.

I was watching a report on PBS a few weeks ago where it said one of the major accomplishments against disease in the United States was the draining and filling in of marshland in and around population areas. DUH! It all makes sense..doesn't it? Washington DC itself was notorious for the infestation of disease in the summer time. The president used to have a summer residence to escape the carnage.

Today, we have environmentalists fighting to keep the marshland and the bogs in and around our cities. They say that it is good for nature. (On my blog I recently posted about the city actually fertilizing my wetland to protect it aginst birds bringing "foreign seeds."

Can it be that these envirnomentalists don't realize the benefit of living longer and healthier or are they true WATERMELONS and think it is grossly unfair that people in third world countries die of disease earlier than Americans.

Here is a solution. We should set up a bog state. A state where all the bogs and marshes are left to be infested by all the malaria carrying mosquitos. People would be free to go and live there amongst the bogs and die of malaria in equal time with the residents of Zaire.

Might be time to drain this swamp. (Good comment, MM. Thanks for the advice.)
